Commodore 64

The 8-bit Computer that Sold a Generation

The Legend: Commodore 64 (1982)

Introduced in January 1982 and released to market in August, the Commodore 64 became the defining mass-market home computer of the 1980s. It combined an accessible BASIC environment with unusually capable custom silicon: the VIC-II graphics chip and the much-loved SID sound chip.

Its aggressive pricing, compatibility with televisions, cartridge and disk expansion, and vast software library made it a fixture in homes, schools and bedrooms. The machine is widely cited as the best-selling single computer model ever, with commonly reported estimates of 12.5 to 17 million units.

For games, the C64 became a creative sweet spot: colourful sprites, smooth scrolling, sampled speech tricks and distinctive music helped build a library that ranged from arcade conversions to original adventures, simulations and strategy classics.

The Business Force: Jack Tramiel

Commodore computers for the masses graphic

Jack Tramiel, founder of Commodore International, drove the company with the famous maxim “computers for the masses, not the classes.” Commodore’s vertical integration gave it control over key chips and allowed the C64 to reach an exceptionally competitive retail price.

The result was a machine that stayed on shelves for more than a decade, outliving many technically newer rivals and creating one of the largest software ecosystems of any 8-bit computer.
